THE IMPORTANCE OF SALAH (PRAYER) IN ISLAM
Salah is the second pillar of Islam and the greatest act of worship after the declaration of faith. It is a direct connection between a believer and Allah, a source of peace, guidance, discipline, forgiveness, and success in this world and the Hereafter. Salah differentiates a believer from disbelief and reminds Muslims of their purpose in life.
Salah is Obligatory for Every Muslim
Allah clearly commands Muslims to establish prayer regularly:
“Indeed, Salah has been prescribed upon the believers at fixed times.”
(Surah An-Nisa, 4:103)
Allah also says:
“Establish prayer, for prayer prevents immorality and wrongdoing.”
(Surah Al-Ankabut, 29:45)
Salah is the Key to Success
Allah mentions success is linked to prayer:
“Successful indeed are the believers, those who are humble in their prayers.”
(Surah Al-Mu’minun, 23:1-2)
Salah is the First Deed to Be Judged
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The first deed for which a servant will be called to account on the Day of Judgment will be Salah. If it is sound, the rest of his deeds will be sound, and if it is bad, the rest of his deeds will be bad.”
(Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Book: Faith and Righteousness, Hadith No. 413)
Leaving Salah is Extremely Dangerous
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Between a man and disbelief and shirk is abandoning Salah.”
(Sahih Muslim, Book: Faith, Hadith No. 82)
Spiritual and Emotional Benefits of Salah
Salah removes stress, purifies the heart, strengthens belief, teaches discipline, brings inner peace, and connects the servant to Allah. It protects from sins and evil desires.
Prayer in Difficult Times
The Prophet ﷺ would rush to prayer whenever he faced difficulty.
He said:
“Prayer is the comfort of my eyes.”
(Sunan An-Nasa’i, Book: Establishing Prayer, Hadith No. 3940)
Conclusion
Salah is not a burden; it is a blessing, mercy, and honor. It is the lifeline of faith and the soul of a believer. Whoever guards Salah, Allah protects their dunya and Akhirah. May Allah make us among those who establish their prayers with sincerity and humility. Ameen.
