RIGHTS OF PARENTS IN ISLAM AND CARING FOR THE ELDERLY
Islam is a religion that beautifully balances worship of Allah and service to humanity. Among all human relationships, parents hold the highest position after Allah and His Messenger. Their sacrifices, sleepless nights, emotional struggles, care, and unconditional love give them a lifelong right to honor, kindness, respect, obedience in lawful matters, and compassionate care, especially in old age. Islam considers serving parents a path to Jannah.
The Status of Parents in The Qur’an
Allah places kindness to parents immediately after the command to worship Him. This shows the greatness of their status. Allah says:
“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to parents. If one or both of them reach old age with you, do not say to them even ‘uff,’ nor scold them; rather speak to them with respect. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, ‘My Lord, have mercy upon them as they raised me when I was small.’”
(Surah Al-Isra, 17:23-24)
Allah also reminds us of the hardships faced mostly by mothers:
“We have commanded man to be good to his parents. His mother bore him in hardship upon hardship, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the final return.”
(Surah Luqman, 31:14)
Even when parents are non-Muslim or pressure their children away from Islam, Allah still commands good behavior:
“But if they strive to make you associate with Me that which you have no knowledge of, do not obey them; but accompany them in this world with kindness.”
(Surah Luqman, 31:15)
Mother’s Special Status in Islam
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the mother’s immense rank. A man asked:
“Who is most deserving of my good companionship?”
The Prophet ﷺ replied, “Your mother.”
The man asked again, “Then who?” He said, “Your mother.”
He asked again, “Then who?” He said, “Your mother.”
He asked again, “Then who?” He said, “Your father.”
(Sahih Bukhari, Book: Good Manners, Hadith No. 5971)
Another narration highlights her greatness:
“Paradise lies under the feet of mothers.”
(Sunan An-Nasa’i, Book: Jihad, Hadith No. 3104)
Serving Parents Leads to Jannah
Serving parents is not a burden; it is a blessing that wipes sins and elevates ranks.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“May his nose be rubbed in dust, the one who reaches his parents in old age, one or both of them, and yet does not enter Paradise.”
(Sahih Muslim, Book: Birr, Hadith No. 2551)
Islamic Teachings on Caring for Elderly Parents
Islam commands:
• speaking gently
• caring for them physically and emotionally
• providing financial support when needed
• attending to their medical care
• protecting their honor and dignity
• spending time with them and listening to them
• making dua for them regularly
Abandoning elderly parents, disrespecting them, arguing, yelling, or placing them in neglectful care without reason is against Islamic morals.
Dua for Parents
“My Lord! Have mercy on my parents as they raised me when I was young.”
(Surah Al-Isra, 17:24)
Conclusion
Islam considers parents a priceless gift. Serving them brings barakah, happiness, peace, and Jannah. May Allah make us among those who honor our parents, serve them lovingly, and earn Paradise through their pleasure. Ameen
