RIGHTS OF NEIGHBORS AND COMMUNITY BUILDING

Islam is not only a religion of worship but also a complete social system that builds moral and loving societies. One of the most beautiful Islamic teachings is the importance of neighbors. Whether Muslim or non-Muslim, rich or poor, near or far, Islam grants them great rights.

Qur’an Emphasizes Kindness to Neighbors

Allah commands:
“Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and be kind to parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, the near neighbor, the distant neighbor, the companion at your side, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess.”
(Surah An-Nisa, 4:36)

Neighbors Have Great Rights

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized neighbors so much that he thought they would become heirs.
“Jibreel kept advising me about the rights of the neighbor so much that I thought he would make him an heir.”
(Sahih Bukhari, Book: Good Manners, Hadith No. 6014)
(Sahih Muslim, Book: Birr, Hadith No. 2625)

A True Believer Never Harms His Neighbor

The Prophet ﷺ said:
“By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer! By Allah, he is not a believer!”
The companions asked, “Who is that, O Messenger of Allah?”
He replied, “The one whose neighbor is not safe from his harm.”
(Sahih Bukhari, Book: Good Manners, Hadith No. 6016)

Rights and Duties Towards Neighbors

Islam teaches:
• Greet them kindly
• Share food
• Help during difficulties
• Visit when sick
• Support in grief and death
• Avoid disturbing them
• Maintain respect and privacy
• Offer kindness regardless of religion

The Prophet ﷺ said:
“He is not a true believer who fills his stomach while his neighbor goes hungry.”
(Sunan Al-Kubra Al-Bayhaqi, Chapter: Rights of Neighbors, Hadith No. 19049)

Importance in Modern Life

Today many people live isolated lives in apartments and busy cities, barely knowing their neighbors. Islam reminds us to reconnect, care, smile, greet, and show warmth.

Conclusion
Strong neighborhoods create strong communities. Islam builds societies on love, support, and brotherhood. Being a good neighbor is an act of worship and a path to Allah’s pleasure.
