CONCEPT OF MODESTY (HAYA) IN ISLAM FOR MEN AND WOMEN

Modesty (Haya) is the soul of Islamic character. It is not only about covering the body but about purity of heart, dignity in behavior, decency in speech, humility in attitude, and morality in lifestyle. Haya protects faith, strengthens families, and preserves society from corruption.

Modesty is Part of Faith

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Modesty (Haya) is part of faith.”
(Sahih Bukhari, Book: Faith, Hadith No. 9)
(Sahih Muslim, Book: Faith, Hadith No. 36)

He also said:
“Every religion has a distinct characteristic, and the distinct characteristic of Islam is modesty.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Book: Zuhd, Hadith No. 4181)

Modesty is for Men and Women Alike

Islam commands men first:
“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their private parts.”
(Surah An-Noor, 24:30)

Then women:
“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze, guard their private parts, and not display their beauty except what is apparent…”
(Surah An-Noor, 24:31)

This shows Islam does not burden only women; both genders are responsible.
